Overview
Farming families (農家, nōka) are families whose business or occupation is farming. Farmers vary according to the nature of their farming activities, but on pixiv there are many field crop farmers works.
Agriculture is not exclusively practiced by farmers; some farms are managed by corporations or cooperatives. However, in most countries, agriculture is dominated by farmers (with the exception of Australia, which specializes in exports, and Russia, where the tradition of kolkhozes remains).
This is because, in the case of agriculture, the larger the operation, the more investment risk increases at an accelerating rate, and the more vulnerable the business foundation tends to become (many farmers in Japan also have huge debts due to the expansion of their operations). In many countries, large-scale farmers are given preferential treatment, such as subsidies only for large-scale operations, but without such measures, farmers often become smaller as time goes by.
People unfamiliar with agriculture may have an image of "rich" farmers because of their large lots, large houses, and several cars, but the majority of farmers in Japan make little money from farming, and their main income comes from their employers, who are often dual-income farmers. Many full-time farmers who do not have a secondary source of income are struggling to pay off their debts as a result of their efforts to expand the scale of their farms in order to secure an income from farming alone.
Japanese consumers are uniquely demanding for high quality, and being able to meet these needs is one of the factors that allows Japanese agriculture to remain competitive against imports, while at the same time increasing the amount of labor required by farmers.
